“I rarely go for treatment because whatever little money I have always ends up being used for food… I have three children, and I still have to take care of them…”
Those words were whispered softly by Grandma Saminem (73), an elderly grandmother who has spent more than a decade struggling alone for the sake of her children.
Her husband passed away 18 years ago, and since then, she has had no choice but to become the backbone of the family — not just for herself, but for her three children.
Two of Grandma Saminem’s children suffer from mental disorders. Another has kidney stones. None of them can work. All of them depend entirely on her.
Meanwhile, her own body has been battling aggressive cancer for 10 long years.
Her facial tissue has begun to deteriorate as the cancer continues to spread. The pain is unbearable, yet Grandma Saminem has never had enough money for proper medical treatment.
Despite her illness and limitations, she still sells nasi pecel door-to-door. For more than 8 years, she has been going from village to village, simply to keep her small kitchen running.
Every cent she earns goes directly to buying just enough food for her and her children. On some days, they eat very little. On other days, there is nothing at all.
