“Many have told me to stop selling. But how will my wife and children eat? If I don’t sell for even a day, my family might go hungry,” said Grandpa Harmaen.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! At the break of dawn, Grandpa Harmaen starts pedaling his old bicycle, carrying a small cart filled with salome (meatball snacks) and cotton candy. Every day, he covers 10 kilometers, sometimes having to walk when his bicycle breaks down or the tires go flat.
Despite starting his rounds early, sales are never guaranteed. His main customers are schoolchildren during recess or after school, so by midday, almost no one buys from him.
Even so, he can’t rely on school sales alone—his profits are barely a dollar per day per day.
Not every day is a good day. Sometimes, even after cycling all the way until nightfall, much of his food remains unsold. And when that happens, Grandpa Harmaen chooses to give it away to strangers rather than let it go to waste.
No one his age should have to struggle like this just to survive.
This Ramadan, let’s help Grandpa Harmaen rest, even for a moment, in his old age. Your kindness can ease his burdens. Support Grandpa Harmaen today.
