“I can’t bear to see injured, starving, and sick dogs on the streets so I always rescue them to shelters. What made me cry the most was when I rescued a dog with a broken leg. He was tied up in an empty house and starving. Now his back leg is completely paralyzed,” said Ms. Kadek.

In the midst of rampant violence against abandoned dogs and the illegal buying and selling of dogs for consumption, Ms. Kadek does her best to save the dogs she meets on the streets. For 3 years, Ms. Kadek has established the shelter, and now the number of dogs has reached 80. 

Her love for animal made her willing to set aside her income from selling satay. Little by little, the money was collected to build a comfortable and safe shelter.

The cost is not small. Not to mention the cost of food, medication, vaccines and vitamins. Mrs. Kadek spends up to 3-4 million per month. 

However, the shelter soon filled up and became cramped. Almost every day, Ms. Kadek found dogs that were dumped by their owners in front of the shelter. Some were dumped because of skin diseases, paralysis, and even old dogs with poor eyesight. 

She couldn’t bear to let them go. After all, these abandoned dogs are considered her own children. But, if this condition continues, Ms. Kadek has no choice but to close her shelter. 

“To reduce costs, I mix dog food with rice. A day’s worth of rice and dog food is 8 kg each. If I have more money, I add beef. But, now I often don’t sell it…” continued Mrs. Kadek.
