Despite his physical limitations, nothing can dampen Pak Tohir’s spirit to work hard and care for his family.
He works as a fish porter, carrying loads of around 150 kg of fish from fishing boats to the shore. For this exhausting job, he only earns less than $2 a day.
“I have to work twice as hard because I’m competing with other porters,” he says quietly.
Sometimes, the pole he uses slips off his shoulder, spilling the fish. With patience, Pak Tohir picks them up one by one with his incomplete hand, before lifting the heavy load again.
What’s admirable is his principle—he refuses to beg, even though life is filled with hardship. Yet behind his perseverance lies a painful reality: his rent has been overdue for 4 months.
Even after trying to find extra work, the income is still not enough to pay it off. Next month, Pak Tohir and his family face the risk of eviction, with no place to go.
